At the beginning of each quarter I delete all downloaded music, playlists, songs, and albums from my library.
Why? To make way for the new music!
After the pandemic I decided I wanted needed to expand my range of musical interests. I have listened to the same artists most of my life and I assume you have too.
I wanted to expand my musical interests.
It all began while driving from Florida to New York with my daughter. This is right around the time that Harry Styles' "Harry's House" had dropped. She had downloaded it (of course) and we began listening.
We listened to that album for 17 hours straight.
It turns out it is a really good album. As a non-Harry Styles fan you just needed to listen it. Then it dawned on me that:
- Any artist would probably sound good after 17 hours of listening.
- I don't know what artists are out there these days.
So we made a game of it. Every quarter I put out a survey to the family. They get to choose which artist I get to listen to for the next quarter. I listen to the entire catalog of that artist for 90 days.
The rules are as follows:
- The artist must have more than 3 albums. I am not listening to the same 1 hit wonder for 90 days.
- I can only listen to that artist. I clear out any downloaded music etc. and start listening.
So far, 3 quarters in, I have to say, this has been a smashing success!
